When should a company invest in platform engineering?
When you have enough product teams that everyone re-solving the same infrastructure problems is measurably slowing delivery. The signals: multiple teams duplicating deployment and infra work, inconsistent security across services, senior engineers stuck on plumbing, and slow, ticket-driven provisioning. Below that threshold, good conventions and managed services beat building a platform, and starting too early usually means an over-engineered product almost nobody adopts.

Multiple teams are independently building the same pipelines, environments, secrets management, and monitoring. The same problem is being solved three different ways.
Senior time going to plumbing
Your best engineers spend their days on infrastructure and deploy toil instead of the product. That is expensive, and it is a platform-shaped problem.
Inconsistent security and standards
Every service does auth, logging, and deployment a little differently, so security and compliance are a constant catch-up game rather than a default.
Slow, ticket-driven delivery
Provisioning an environment or shipping a service means filing a ticket and waiting. Developers are blocked on ops instead of self-serving.
